UK and Nigeria Sign Deal Allowing British Lawyers to Practice in Nigeria

The United Kingdom and Nigeria have reached an agreement to facilitate the practice of British legal professionals in Nigeria, paving the way for enhanced trade and investment between the two nations.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the partnership deal aims to promote economic cooperation and create new opportunities for both countries. It expands beyond financial transactions, building upon an existing $7 billion partnership between the UK and Nigeria.

The agreement, known as the Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP), marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind between the UK and an African country.

Kemi Badenoch, British Business and Trade Secretary, highlighted the potential of the agreement, emphasizing Nigeria’s status as one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa. She expressed optimism about the prospects for UK businesses in Nigeria and the continued growth of bilateral relations.

The deal also entails commitments from Nigeria to address barriers hindering UK lawyers from practicing international and foreign law within the country. By removing these obstacles, Nigeria aims to facilitate greater participation of UK legal practitioners in its legal system, which could lead to increased exports of UK legal services.
