UK to Introduce Digital Entry Permits for Nigerian Travellers and Others from April

Starting this Wednesday, travellers to the United Kingdom can apply for the new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), which will become mandatory from April 2. This means that from that date, a passport alone will no longer be enough for entry into the UK.

The ETA is a digital security check designed for travellers who do not need a visa to enter Britain. It costs €10 ($12.80), but this fee is expected to increase to €16 in the coming months. The UK’s Home Office clarified that the ETA is not a visa but a requirement that grants permission to enter the country.

Similar systems are already used by countries like the United States and Australia to enhance border security. The Home Office explained that the ETA helps prevent individuals who pose security threats from entering the UK. The process includes checks for criminal records and aims to reduce misuse of the UK immigration system.

Once approved, an ETA allows multiple entries and stays of up to six months within a two-year period, as long as the traveller’s passport remains valid. The application process is digital, with the UK government recommending the use of its dedicated mobile app.

Applicants must provide their address, workplace details, and passport photo. Travellers aged nine and above must also submit a facial photo. Those without a compatible smartphone can apply through the official UK government website.
