Ukraine Donates 7,000 Tonnes of Wheat to Alleviate Hunger Crisis in Sudan
In a significant humanitarian effort, Ukraine has generously donated over 7,000 tonnes of wheat to provide vital sustenance for one million people in Sudan for a month, as announced by the UN World Food Programme (WFP).
This substantial donation, part of Ukraine’s ‘Grain from Ukraine’ humanitarian initiative initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has been dispatched to the coastal city of Port Sudan and swiftly loaded onto WFP trucks for immediate distribution to those in urgent need of food assistance.
Amidst the ongoing conflict and escalating food insecurity in Sudan, exacerbated by months of military clashes, the arrival of this in-kind donation is a beacon of hope for vulnerable communities facing dire circumstances.
Eddie Rowe, WFP’s Country Director in Sudan, emphasized the critical nature of the situation, stating that urgent action is imperative to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian crisis. He underscored the agency’s relentless efforts to swiftly deliver crucial food aid to families grappling with escalating hunger and instability.
The 7,600 tonnes of wheat flour provided by Ukraine will offer essential sustenance to families, many of whom have been displaced by the conflict and are struggling to meet their basic food needs on a daily basis.
The entire €15 million operating costs of this humanitarian endeavor, including transportation from Ukraine to Sudan and distribution within the country, were covered by the German Federal Foreign Office, demonstrating a commitment to alleviating suffering and fostering stability in conflict-affected regions.
This timely intervention is particularly crucial as Sudan braces for the lean season in May, when food scarcity typically intensifies, further exacerbating hunger and vulnerability among the population.
Expressing gratitude to both Ukraine and Germany for their unwavering support, Eddie Rowe reiterated the vital role of humanitarian assistance in providing lifelines to communities ravaged by conflict.
