UN Set to Vote on First Resolution on Artificial Intelligence, Prioritizing Safety”
The United Nations General Assembly is poised to vote on a groundbreaking resolution concerning artificial intelligence (AI), marking the organization’s first foray into regulating this rapidly advancing technology. Spearheaded by the United States, the resolution aims to ensure that AI benefits all nations while upholding human rights and fostering safety, security, and trustworthiness in its application.
Jake Sullivan, U.S. National Security Advisor, hailed the resolution as a “historic step forward” in promoting the responsible use of AI. Designed to bridge the digital gap between developed and developing nations, the resolution emphasizes inclusivity and seeks to empower all countries to leverage AI’s potential, from disease detection to disaster prediction and workforce development.
Acknowledging the swift evolution of AI, the resolution underscores the need for a global consensus on safe and secure AI systems while acknowledging the dynamic nature of AI governance. It also highlights ongoing efforts by various entities, including the European Union and the International Telecommunication Union, to establish regulatory frameworks for AI.
