Unity Bank Appoints Ebenezer Kolawole as Acting MD/CEO
Unity Bank has appointed Ebenezer Kolawole as its acting Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer following the retirement of Tomi Somefun, who has completed her tenure and proceeded on terminal leave. The appointment was announced at the bank’s 18th Annual General Meeting in Lagos after securing approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Kolawole, a seasoned banker with over 30 years of industry experience, has been with Unity Bank since 2015, initially serving as Chief Financial Officer before being appointed Executive Director in 2018. His expertise spans finance, operations, and information technology, making him a strategic choice for leading the bank during this transition.
Before joining Unity Bank, Kolawole held key positions at several financial institutions, including Ecobank, Standard Trust Bank, United Bank for Africa, and Mainstreet Bank, where he played a pivotal role in corporate finance, regulatory risk management, and business transformation. He also briefly worked at Globacom in corporate business development.
With a First-Class degree in Accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University, Kolawole has attended executive programs at Columbia Business School and The Wharton School. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Institute of Credit Administration, among other professional bodies.
His primary responsibility will be to oversee the bank’s ongoing corporate programs and strategic business initiatives. His appointment also comes amid Unity Bank’s planned merger with Providus Bank, which recently received CBN approval along with a N700 billion support package.
