US Navy Sailor, Oriola Michael Aregbesola, Dies in Tragic Red Sea Accident

A Navy sailor tragically lost his life after falling overboard while serving in the Red Sea, as confirmed by the Pentagon. The deceased has been identified as Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Oriola Michael Aregbesola, aged 34, from Miramar, Florida. The incident occurred on March 20, 2024, and is classified as a ‘non-combat related incident,’ prompting an investigation by the Pentagon.

According to the U.S. Navy, Aregbesola was serving aboard the USS Mason (DDG 87) when the accident took place. Aregbesola, who joined the Navy in July 2020, was part of the Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 74, known as the ‘Swamp Foxes,’ since December 2020. Commander Eric Kohut praised Aregbesola’s dedication and character, highlighting his exceptional performance and camaraderie within the squadron.

The USS Mason has been deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet in the Red Sea since November, participating in joint military efforts to counter terror threats. This deployment follows the Pentagon’s announcement in December of the United States joining a 10-nation military pact aimed at enhancing security in the Red Sea. The alliance, including nations such as the United Kingdom, Bahrain, and France, was formed in response to escalating tensions and attacks on commercial vessels.

The Houthi movement, which controls significant territories in Yemen, has claimed responsibility for some of the attacks in the region. These actions, purportedly in support of Palestinian causes amid the Hamas-Israel conflict, have raised concerns among international stakeholders. The Pentagon’s investigation into Aregbesola’s death underscores the risks faced by military personnel during active duty and the importance of safety protocols in maritime operations.
