Veteran South African Actress Connie Chiume Dies at Age 72

Connie Chiume, a renowned South African actress, has passed away at the age of 72. The family confirmed the news, and Chiume’s death marks a significant loss for the South African entertainment industry.

Connie Chiume, who was celebrated for her roles in South African TV shows like *Rhythm City*, *Zone 14*, and *Gomora*, died on Tuesday afternoon in a Johannesburg hospital. The family, while requesting privacy, stated that further details regarding her burial will be shared in due course.

Her son, Nongelo Chiume, shared with Newzroom Afrika that Connie had been admitted for a “medical procedure” before her passing. Despite recent health challenges, Connie remained an influential figure in the acting world.

Chiume began her acting career in 1989 with *Inkom’ Edla Yodwa* and went on to become a household name. She gained international recognition for her role as Zawavari in the Marvel film *Black Panther* and reprised her role in *Black Panther: Wakanda Forever*. Additionally, she appeared in Beyoncé’s Disney film *The Lion King* as Sarabi.

Born in Welkom, Free State, Connie Chiume had a diverse background, with a Malawian father and a Zulu mother. She initially trained as a nurse but later pursued a career in teaching before becoming an acclaimed actress. In a 2022 podcast interview, she expressed her hope that people would remember her in their own way, reflecting her impact on many lives.

Tributes have flooded in from fans and colleagues, with many celebrating her versatile career and significant contributions to the South African entertainment industry. The South African government also paid tribute on X, noting that “her outstanding work will always be remembered.”

Connie Chiume is survived by her four children—two sons and two daughters. Her legacy as a pioneering actress and her contributions to both South African and global cinema will continue to be cherished.
