Why You Should Stop Licking Your Lips, According to a Dermatologist

A leading dermatologist, Dr. Folakemi Cole-Adeife, has warned against the habit of licking lips frequently, as it can cause Lip Licker’s Dermatitis (LLD)—a condition that leads to dry, cracked, and peeling lips.

Speaking in an interview, the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) consultant explained that saliva is meant to stay inside the mouth, not on the lips. When frequently exposed, it irritates the skin due to its alkaline nature, leading to barrier dysfunction and chronic dryness.

To prevent LLD, Dr. Cole-Adeife advised breaking the habit by chewing gum instead and using moisturizers like Vaseline to keep lips hydrated. She also noted that certain products, such as lipsticks, toothpaste, or lip balms, could trigger allergic reactions, worsening lip dryness.

Additionally, she emphasized the importance of hydration, recommending that individuals drink plenty of water and use hyaluronic acid creams at night for extra nourishment. If using a lip balm, she suggests choosing one with sunscreen to protect against sun damage.
